Anxiety and Depression

Wound

You lie awake in bed, every negative scenario playing over and over in your head like a mental horror festival with you in the starring role. You try to soothe yourself. If only you could remain calm. You take a deep breath, but it seems impossible. Your heart is palpitating so. And so, it goes. Another listless night.

The alarm clock sounds, and the cycle starts again. Work fills you with a sense of dread – you have to pull over to deal with a panic attack.

By the time you arrive, your temples are pounding, but it’s not just your head. Every muscle and joint is screaming. Your blood pressure is out of control, and your coworkers avoid you for fear you’ll bite their heads off.

The day is shot. That’s it. Nothing you can do now – except wait for the inevitable disaster.

Unwound

It’s all so exhausting. And you’re so – utterly – tired. You retreat to the couch or bed, and even getting up to eat or drink takes herculean effort.

Friends call, but you don’t answer. Why bother? Nothing’s fun anymore. And everything frustrates you. You feel guilty because your temper has gotten out of hand.

Besides, you’ve ruined so much – failed so many times – you don’t understand why they’d want to spend time with you now.

Most days, you can’t think straight, and you seem to cry at the drop of a hat. Barely able to concentrate, you struggle to make it through the day.

And if you’re sincere, you’ve wondered, at least once, whether the world would be better off without you.

Facts of Life

Everybody goes through rough times. A little anxiety and depression are normal – sometimes, even helpful – to get us through. After the dust settles, we go back to our everyday routines.

However, sometimes stress overwhelms and turns the “normal” into the “impossible.”

Anxiety can manifest as intense, excessive, persistent worry and fear about everyday life. These feelings can interfere with daily activities and can be difficult to control.

Depression negatively affects how you feel, think, and act. It can creep into your life like sadness, loneliness, and apathy. Unmotivated, exhausted, defeated, you may develop a variety of emotional and physical problems that decrease your ability to function at both work and home.

The struggle is real, but there’s also hope!
